Set Some Goals: Mini-Morning Devotional

November 22, 2017

Goals. That word gets thrown around more times than I can handle. Usually on a post where someone digs deep into the dangerous world of comparison. A lot of times goals are us aspiring to be what we see from others instead of something that we want to accomplish. I see a lot of goals that are shared more for validation instead of being confident enough to stay true to ourself and do what we are called to do and not what others are called to do. For the sake of time, i'm going to just talk about goals and not insecurities or comparison (I'll save that for another blog post) But what are your goals? What are the dreams and desires that God has placed on the inside of you and have nothing to do with what someone else has accomplished or shared with a perfect filter on instagram? Do you have any?

Have goals turned into hopeless somedays or do you write them down with every intention of achieving them and crossing them off in your journal? I want you to give yourself a little more credit but more importantly, give God a little more credit. Sometimes we look at things realistically and say okay Lord how can I realistically do what I was created to do? And we put God in the four walls of a shallow box and we wait for Him to move within those four walls and wonder why nothing is happening. We trust what God can do, as longs it fits in a realistic box.

Ephesians 3:20 says; "God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us."

When God calls you to something, or places a dream on the inside of you, it is always for a reason. It is His very intention to see it through. He knows who He created you to be and what you are capable of. Not only does He know what you are capable of, but He also wants to show you what He can do through you.

I want to challenge you to give the creator of the heavens and the earth some credit and don't be afraid to set goals towards those dreams that are on the inside of you. Trust that the creator who breathed life into you knows what He is doing if He gives you a vision. He calls us chosen, wonderfully made, eternally loved, and capable. Know that if He put it inside of you that it was for a reason, God never does things by accident. Trust the Lord fully and what He can do without your box. He can do far more than what we can imagine. He wants to move through you, just trust and believe that He will.

Some practical things to keep in mind when it comes to setting goals.

1. Write it down - When we take a vision or a dream and write it down it goes from a dream to a goal. Write down all that God has shown you about that dream and pray that God would reveal how to get started.

2. What practical steps can you take to get there? - Where can you start? Maybe it's starting a website. Maybe it's getting insight from someone in the field, maybe it's going to school and taking some classes to be better equipped. Instead of dreaming for the next ten years, look at what steps you can take to get started and make that dream a reality.

3. Do Your research - We are in the digital age and are blessed to have the world at our fingertips. If we don't have the answer to something we can get our phone and google it. We can watch YouTube videos of how people do x, y and z. We can get all sorts of inspiration from instagram or create a Pinterest board full of ideas or the type of brand that we are envisioning. The amount of apps we have is amazing and should definitely be taken advantage of. All it takes is time. That is one of the easiest ways to learn and it's free.

4. Just Do It! - Sometimes we dream so much of what we want to do that it stays a dream because we overthink everything instead of just starting somewhere. Now don't get me wrong, I am a firm believer in planning, I have been "planning" Finding Your Identity and this website for years, and it was just a dream a little longer than it should have been. Sometimes we need to take a step of faith and just start somewhere. With prayerful decision making, you are capable of accomplishing more than you think.
